Advent Day 11 – Romford Laundry bag, 1900-1950

In the run up to Christmas we’ll show some of the objects added to the Museum’s collection in the last 12 months. These objects will be on display at the Museum until we close for Christmas on 16th December.

Before washing machines were commonplace, doing the laundry was a particularly time-consuming task.  Those who could afford it resorted to sending their washing out to laundry shops, the forerunner of today’s launderettes.  The washing would be done and then returned in sacks such as this.  Unfortunately we have been unable to trace where this particular laundry was located. It may be that it was in North Street.
