Art and War at Havering Museum

What connects the First World War poet Wilfred Owen with Havering? Find out in a special new exhibition this autumn.

 The Artists Rifles, a former Officer Training Corps of the British Army, came to Romford in 1915 and encamped at Hare Hall (now theRoyal Liberty School). After receiving their training, the officers were commissioned into various regiments from all over the country. Among the officer cadets in this eclectic unit were graphic artist Alfred Leete (famous for designing the Lord Kitchener “Your country needs you” poster), cartoonist Sidney Strube, and the celebrated poet Wilfred Owen.
