Havering goes to Essex

Recently, Havering Museum’s Education Officer Laura Turnage and I paid a visit to the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford to gather resources to use in education activities for schools and families.

Havering is, of course, now part of Greater London, but for most of its history it was part of the county of Essex, and many documents relating to the history of Havering can be found in the storerooms at the Essex Record Office.

The main purpose of our visit was to trace the history of Havering through old maps, the highlight being a 400 year old map of Havering, beautifully drawn and naming the owners of each individual field.

We are planning to incorporate the results of our visit into the education activities offered by Havering Museum, including activities exploring the history of Havering during the Tudor period, when Havering Palace and Pyrgo Palace were country retreats for the royal family.
